Choose the right adhesive for your mosaic project
The right mosaic adhesive depends on the base material, the shape of the project and where the finished mosaic will be used. A flat MDF trivet needs a different type of adhesive from a glass lantern, a mosaic ball, mirror mosaic or a project intended for outdoor use.
This guide helps you compare some of the most useful adhesives in our range and choose a suitable option for flat mosaic projects, glass, wood and MDF, mirror mosaic, curved and three-dimensional surfaces and outdoor projects.
Please note: Always check the individual product page and follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety information. Suitable materials, drying and curing times and environmental conditions vary between adhesives.

Which mosaic adhesive should I use?
There is no single adhesive that is ideal for every mosaic project. Start by considering three things: the base material, the shape of the surface and the conditions in which the finished mosaic will be used.
Adhesive for glass lanterns and decorative bottles
Glass is smooth and non-porous, so an adhesive with good initial tack makes the work much easier. This is particularly important on vertical or curved glass because the mosaic pieces can otherwise begin to slide before the adhesive has cured.
Collall Silicone Glue 3D-Kit and Olba Transparent Glue are good choices for glass lanterns, decorative bottles and other glass-based mosaic projects.
The gel-like consistency helps the pieces remain in position while the adhesive cures.
Adhesive for mirror mosaic
Mirror mosaic needs particular care when choosing an adhesive. The back of a mirror contains a reflective metallised layer, and some solvent-based adhesives can damage this coating over time. The damage may appear as darkening or cloudiness.
For mirror mosaic, choose a water-based adhesive such as Collall Mosaic Glue or Olba Transparent Glue, which is suitable for mirrors.
We do not recommend silicone adhesive or Collall All-Purpose Glue for mirror-backed pieces.
Adhesive for MDF and wood
For a flat mosaic on MDF or wood, a fluid adhesive is often the easiest option because the pieces can rest naturally on the horizontal surface.
Collall Mosaic Glue is particularly well suited to flat, porous bases such as MDF and wood. Typical projects include trivets, mosaic pictures, frames and other decorative flat surfaces.
Collall All-Purpose Glue can also be used for many flat mosaic and craft projects.
Adhesive for mosaic balls, pots and other 3D projects
On a curved, vertical or three-dimensional surface, good initial tack becomes much more important. A very fluid adhesive may allow the pieces to slide before they are securely held in position.
For mosaic balls, lanterns, decorative bottles, polystyrene shapes and other curved projects, a gel-like adhesive such as Collall Silicone Glue 3D-Kit or Olba is usually easier to work with.
For larger decorative surfaces, such as mosaic flowerpots and larger balls, Kiilto Pro Kerafix is another useful option. It is ready to use, economical and has good initial grab.
Adhesive for polystyrene
Polystyrene is commonly used for mosaic balls, cones, mushrooms and other decorative shapes. Always choose an adhesive that is specifically suitable for the material.
Collall Silicone Glue 3D-Kit and Olba are suitable for many polystyrene mosaic projects. Kerafix can also be used with polystyrene according to its product information.
Adhesive for outdoor mosaics
An adhesive being frost-resistant does not automatically make the entire mosaic suitable for year-round outdoor use. The base, mosaic pieces and grout must also withstand moisture, temperature changes and frost.
Collall Silicone Glue 3D-Kit is frost-resistant and suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Olba is weather- and frost-resistant.
Kerafix forms a frost-resistant adhesive joint, but it is not intended for surfaces in continuous contact with water. Decorative pots and similar projects used outdoors during the warmer season should be protected according to the product instructions and moved into shelter where appropriate.
Gel-like or fluid mosaic adhesive?
Gel-like adhesives
A gel-like adhesive is especially useful when the pieces need to remain in position immediately. Choose this type of adhesive for:
- vertical surfaces
- curved or rounded surfaces
- mosaic balls and decorative figures
- glass lanterns and decorative bottles
- polystyrene shapes
- other three-dimensional mosaic projects
Fluid adhesives
A more fluid adhesive is often convenient on a flat surface where gravity is not pulling the pieces out of position. It is particularly useful for:
- trivets
- mosaic pictures
- MDF bases
- wooden bases
- frames and trays
- other flat mosaic and craft projects
How to glue mosaic pieces step by step
- Choose the right adhesive. Consider the base material, the shape of the project and where it will be used.
- Prepare the base. It should be clean, dry, stable and suitable for the adhesive.
- Plan the layout. If the pattern is detailed, position some of the pieces before you begin gluing.
- Work on a small area at a time. Do not spread more adhesive than you can cover before it begins to set.
- Press each mosaic piece gently into place. Use enough adhesive for good contact, but avoid excessive adhesive squeezing up around the edges.
- Remove fresh adhesive residue according to the instructions for the product you are using.
- Allow the adhesive to dry and cure fully before moving, using or grouting the mosaic.
Useful tools for gluing mosaics
A few simple tools can make gluing easier and more precise. A glue spreader is useful for covering a flat area evenly, while a glue syringe helps with small details and difficult-to-reach areas. Tweezers or a StickyStick pick-up pen can make placing small mosaic pieces easier.

Frequently asked questions about mosaic glue
What is the easiest mosaic adhesive for a beginner?
For a simple flat mosaic on MDF or wood, Collall Mosaic Glue is an easy option because it is water-based, easy to spread and dries clear. For a glass lantern, ball or other curved surface, a gel-like adhesive with stronger initial tack is usually easier to use.
What glue should I use for glass mosaic?
For glass bases such as lanterns and bottles, choose an adhesive that bonds to smooth, non-porous surfaces and has enough initial tack to prevent the pieces from sliding. Collall Silicone Glue 3D-Kit and Olba are suitable choices.
Can I use silicone glue on mirror mosaic?
We do not recommend it. Some solvent-based and silicone adhesives can damage the reflective backing of mirror pieces. Use a suitable water-based adhesive or Olba instead.
What adhesive should I use for a mosaic ball?
A gel-like adhesive with good initial tack is usually the easiest choice because it helps keep pieces in place on a curved surface. Collall Silicone Glue 3D-Kit and Olba are suitable examples.
Can mosaic adhesive be used outdoors?
Yes, provided the individual adhesive is suitable for the intended conditions. Check whether it is weather-, moisture- and frost-resistant. Remember that the base, mosaic material and grout must also be suitable for outdoor use.
How long should mosaic adhesive dry before grouting?
Drying and curing times vary between products, base materials and working conditions. Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions before grouting.
