Decorate a Mosaic Flower Pot – Step by Step

In this project, you first decorate the outside of the pot, then the inside of the rim and finally the top edge. Once the glue has dried, the mosaic is finished with grout. Take a moment for yourself and enjoy the creative process.

Tip: Combine glass mosaic, mirror pieces and small beads to create a lively surface with plenty of color and shine.

1. Decorate the outside of the pot

  • If needed, cut some of the 20 mm mosaic pieces and mirror pieces into narrower strips with mosaic cutters.

  • Always wear safety glasses when cutting mosaic pieces.

Start gluing the pieces from the upper edge of the pot. To keep the pot steady while working, support it with a folded towel or bubble wrap.

Note! When gluing the first row, leave a little space at the top. Later you can add a finishing layer of smaller mosaic pieces and beads there.

Glue the pieces row by row downwards. Apply glue directly onto a small section of the pot at a time and press the pieces lightly into place. Avoid getting glue on your fingers or on top of the mosaic pieces.

A palette knife or a sturdy piece of cardboard works well for spreading the glue. For precise placement of small pieces, you can also use a StickyStick pen.

  • Leave about 2 mm between the pieces if the work will be grouted.

  • Keep the bottom row slightly above the bottom of the pot, so the finished pot does not scratch the surface underneath.

2. Decorate the inside and top edge

  • Cut smaller mosaic pieces into narrow strips if you want to decorate the inside of the rim.

  • Apply glue along the inside edge of the pot and press the pieces into place.

  • Let the work dry for a while.

Finally, glue smaller mosaic pieces and beads along the top edge of the pot. Let the work dry thoroughly, preferably overnight, before grouting.

3. Grout the mosaic

  • Mix the grout according to the instructions on the package.

  • Stir until the mixture has a porridge-like consistency and let it rest as instructed.

  • Apply the grout with a rubber spreader or with gloved hands in crossing movements, making sure all gaps are filled.

Important: Wear a dust mask when mixing grout and safety gloves when grouting.

4. Finish the surface

  • Wipe the mosaic surface with a damp grout sponge using circular movements. This smooths and compacts the grout.

  • If small holes appear in the grout, add a little more grout and wipe again.

  • When the grout has started to dry slightly, carefully clean the surface with a dry, soft and lint-free cloth.

  • Let the work dry thoroughly before use.

Note! Do not pour leftover grout down the drain. Let it harden and dispose of it according to local waste instructions.

Done! You have created a beautiful handmade mosaic flower pot that adds color and personality to your home, balcony or garden.
