Give your table new life
Want to refresh a worn-out table or cover a new but dull surface? Follow these steps and succeed!
1. Choose a sturdy table
Mosaic hides wear and turns any table into a focal point. Pick a stable, flat surface. For outdoors, metal tables are most durable. Wood tables are best indoors or under cover to prevent warping that may crack the mosaic. Mosaic adds weight—avoid very thin tops.
2. Prepare the surface
For wood, lightly sand lacquer/paint to a key and wipe dust with a damp cloth. Ensure metal is clean and dry before gluing.
3. Design the pattern & choose pieces
Sketch the layout first. Mixing thicknesses adds texture; for an even top, choose same-thickness materials and skip convex pieces like glass gems. See our recommendations: Mosaic table materials. Estimate coverage with our calculator: Mosaic calculator. Order enough at once, as shades may vary slightly between batches.
4. Glue the mosaic
Draw guide lines if helpful. Apply glue to a small area and press pieces in. For indoor wood, use suitable craft/mosaic glues; an all-purpose option works on wood and metal. For outdoor sets, choose strong, weather-resistant adhesives with good initial grab: Olba and Silicone. Browse all: Mosaic glues.
5. Grouting
After the glue cures overnight, grout the next day. Wear a respirator and gloves. Mix grout per instructions, spread with a grout float, wipe excess, let it haze, then clean with a slightly damp sponge/lint-free cloth and finish with a dry cloth. Dark grout (e.g., black) stays cleaner on tabletops.
With these tips, you’ll create a durable, unique mosaic table you’ll enjoy for years. Find all recommended supplies here: Mosaic table materials.
